Purple Sandpiper

Calidris maritima

One day, I decided I would walk out to Hilbre Island and stay there while the tide came in, so I’d be cut off from the mainland for a few hours. It was a great experience, but I was a bit disappointed to find that I was not the only one to have the idea!

This was the first and only time I’ve seen a Purple Sandpiper, so at the time I wasn’t sure what it was. The pictures were taken near the old lifeboat station to the north of the island. They’re not the most artistic, on what was a dull and wet day, but I’m pleased them even so.

If you like the idea of walking out to Hilbre Island, please check the tide times, as it can be quite dangerous if you time it badly.
