Mallard

Anas platyrhynchos

Squawking they rise from reeds into the sun,
climbing like furies, running on blood and bone,
with wings like garden sheers clipping the misty air,
four mallard, hard-winged, with necks like rods,
fly in perfect formation over the marsh.
