Black-necked Grebe
Podiceps nigricollis
I took these pictures at Moore Nature Reserve on the same day.
I saw them at the far side of Birchwood Pool where I couldn’t find a spot to get within reach. So I decided to settle down at the far side of the pool under my homemade leaf-screen hide and hope for the best.
I was there for a long time with my flask of coffee and snacks. There were other birds coming and going to keep me interested, including Great Crested Grebe.
It rained quite heavily for a while and I thought I might be out of luck, but eventually the Black-necked Grebes gradually drifted towards me. They could hear my camera clicking away, but this seemed to bring them closer, if anything.
